Midtown - Downtown in Columbia in Richland County, South Carolina — The American South (South Atlantic)
A Masterful Design
If this urban estate had been completed as originally envisioned, extensive pleasure gardens would have been planted in the 1820s to complement the impressive mansion. Realizing this, Historic Columbia commissioned landscape architect Edward Pinckney to develop a plan showing how the property could function as a cultural attraction and historic site. Pinckney recommended two acres of formal geometric gardens to the south and a more natural lawn park setting to the north.
