Mission in Hidalgo County, Texas — The American South (West South Central)
Madero Valley Brickers
Frenando "Nango" Rivera Sr., manager of the Madero Valley Brickers, is seen around 1941. The Brickers played in the small farming community just south of Mission and along the Texas-Mexico border. The Madero Valley Brickers represented the Valley Brick & Tile Co., which had operated in Modern (3 miles south of Mission) since the early 1920s. Economic and wartime constraints during the 1930s and early 1940s ended organized minor league baseball in the region. City leagues, with teams sponsored by local businesses, sprang up to fill the void.
