In 1573, on the eleventh day of October, Count Bossu was captured here in Hoorn, imprisoned in this house for three years after the battle he had lost on the Zuiderzee.
The above memorial was located above the former entrance to the prison: this stone was placed in memory of it in 1848.

Maximilian of Hιnin-Liιtard (French: Maximilien de Hιnin-Liιtard or Hιnnin-Liιtard) (Boussu, 1542 Antwerp, 21 December 1578), Count of Boussu (also spelled Bossu), Lord of Beuvry and Rimogne, was a Southern Netherlands soldier and politician. From 1567 to 1573 he was stadtholder of Holland and Utrecht.(Submitted on January 26, 2026.)
Captivity in Hoorn (1573-1576)- The Battle of the Zuiderzee effectively brought a dramatic end to Boussu's stadtholdership of Holland and Utrecht in Spanish service. It marked the beginning of a period of captivity in the confiscated Monastery of St. Mary. Boussu's captivity ended with the Pacification of Ghent on November 8, 1576. Article 9 stipulated the release of all political prisoners held by both sides, and in particular the Count of Boussu. Escorted by, among others, Admiral Cornelis Dircksz, his opponent in the Battle of the Zuiderzee, he was taken to Middelburg, where he was hospitably received by the Prince of Orange and stayed for several days. Upon his departure, he promised the prince "all good deeds for the benefit of the fatherland." He then traveled to Brussels, where he was welcomed upon arrival by the States-General.
