1. Science at Palmer & Stouffer Hall Marker
As Dr. Brown shifted Palmer's curriculum from basic education towards a college preparatory and social finishing curriculum, she introduced a range of new science courses.
Starting in the mid 1930s, Palmer students could take biology, chemistry, and physics.
As science education continued to evolve, so did the school's offerings, and in 1966 this building, Stouffer Hall, was constructed to further facilitate science teaching on campus. The building featured a low profile so it would not visually compete with the Alice Freeman Palmer Building.
Inside, it featured well-ventilated lab stations outfitted so that students could mirror their instructor at the front of the room. The building also included a greenhouse.
Nature
Nature was an important part of campus life at Palmer. Dr. Brown saw the ample woods around campus as an extension of the classroom. She regularly took students on nature walks through the campus woods where they would identify plants and wildlife. These walks were also spiritual in nature, giving Dr. Brown an opportunity to show students how to meditate and be at peace in the natural world.
