1. A Perfect Hell on Earth Marker

Inscription. On July 2, 1863, Confederate General James Longstreet’s 1st Corps formed on this ridge to attack the high ground to your front. Late in the afternoon, Confederate artillery pummeled Union soldiers near the Peach Orchard before the Southerners advanced. After three hours of brutal fighting, Confederates captured the high ground along the Sherfy and Rose Farms, but were unable to drive the Union defenders off Little Round Top and Cemetery Ridge. Some 15,000 soldiers were killed, wounded, or captured.
