The Funeral Chapel
The former funeral chapel is one of the few remaining buildings of the originally elaborate cemetery architecture. Soon after its establishment as the central burial site, the South Cemetery had to be expanded. Architect Gustav Vorherr planned a completely new design for this purpose (Fig. 1). With the semicircular arcade (Fig. 2), he created new, prestigious burial plots. Very soon, prominent Munich families, including Preysing, Eichthal, and Maffei, were laid to rest there. They commissioned leading Munich artists for their tombstones: Klenze, Gärtner, Schwanthaler, Stiglmaier, Miller, etc. Above the grave monuments, a row of niches was created for busts of distinguished Munich citizens.
After the extensive destruction during the Second World War, only the funeral chapel was rebuilt in a modified form by Hans Döllgast in the early 1950s and incorporated into the four arcades in front of it.
