On August 22, 1944, amidst the Allied advance and the fighting for the liberation of Paris, insurgent police officers from the 12th arrondissement police station came to the aid of railway workers, primarily members of the "Tante Jeanne" resistance group, who were engaged in combat with the enemy at the Porte de Charenton (12th arrondissement), near the Valmy Cemetery.

The railway workers had just captured a group of isolated German soldiers, who were in fact leading a larger unit, supported by a motorized vehicle.
