1. Portuguese Exhibit Marker
From islands in the Atlantic to islands in the Pacific, Portuguese came. This miniature house, representing the architecture of Portugal, commemorates Hawai'i's Portuguese immigrants. Settlers from the Portuguese islands of Madeira and Azores came to Hawai'i from the 1870's through the turn of the century to work in the sugar fields, as ranchers, farmers, and crafters. Forsaking home and all that was familiar, the Portuguese-like Maui's other early immigrants-sought a better life in far away Hawai'i.
Portuguese immigrants represent Maui's earliest link to European culture. That link has expanded to a powerful influence that touches all aspects of contemporary life on Maui. From food to music to politics, a proud and rich Portuguese heritage is everywhere evident on Maui today.
