Kapaniwai Chinese Heritage Garden, also, Sun Yat Sen Bronze Statue. . , In commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of the XinHai Revolution, which marks the birth of Modern China. The Sun Yat-sen Foundation for Peace and Education proudly dedicates this bronze statue in memory of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, who was once a resident of Maui and a member of its Chinese community., Amongst the early Chinese settlers to Maui, was Sun Mei, the elder brother of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, who came to Hawaii in 1871, and later prospered as a successful merchant enabling him to sponsor his brother to Hawaii for his education. The young Sun Yat-sen arrived in Hawaii in 1879 at the age of 12 and half years old and was educated at Iolani and Punahou, Hawaii's two premier educational institutions.>br> , From 1879 to 1910, Dr. Sun Yat-sen made six trips to Hawaii, which were instrumental towards his education and revolutionary career. On November 24, 1894, Dr. Sun Yat-sen founded the Hsing Chung Hui, the Revive China Society in Honolulu making Hawaii into the birthplace of the Modern Chinese Revolution., In 1881 Sun Mei moved to Maui and opened the Kahului General Store and owned a vast 3,900 acre ranch in Kamaole-Kula, near the town of Keokea, which earned him the nickname "King of Kula" by the local Chinese. Sun Mei's ranch house in Kamaole was the home to the entire Sun Family from 1896-1907, and was known as the" Residence of Dr. Sun Yat-sen" on Maui. Dr. Sun was to organize 10 uprisings, which sowed the seeds for the successful October 10, 1911 Xinhai Revolution, which led to the founding of the Republic of China, the first modern republic in Asia., Amongst Dr. Sun's 10 revolts, four were staged in 1907 alone. Sun Mei was Dr. Sun's greatest supporter and he eventually sold all of his properties, businesses, and even his home to support his brother's revolution, declaring bankruptcy that same year, causing the Sun Family to be uprooted from Hawaii., So deep was the connection between Dr. Sun Yat-sen and Hawaii that in an interview with Albert Pierce Taylor, a newspaper reporter in 1910, he said, "This is my Hawaii... here I was brought up and educated, and it was here that I came to know what modern civilized governments are like and what they mean.", Dr. Sun Yat-sen's comprehensive blueprint and vision for the future of China is known as the "Three Principles of the People": Nationalism, Democracy, and the People's Livelihood, which encompasses the political, economic and social restructuring of China, which would transform China into a powerful, prosperous and modern nation with social justice, capturing the essence of Abraham Lincoln's saying a republic: Of the People. By the People, For the People and spirit of the French Revolution, Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity. Dr. Sun Yat-Sen's Testament , For forty years I have devoted myself to the cause of the people's revolution with but one end in view the elevation of China to a position of freedom and equality among nations. My experiences during these forty years have firmly convinced me that to attain this goal we must bring about a thorough awakening of our own people and ally ourselves in a common struggle with those peoples of the world who treat us as equals., The work of the Revolution is not yet done. Let all our comrades follow my Plans for National Reconstruction Fundamentals of National Reconstruction. Three Principles of the People, and the Manifesto issued by the First National Congress of our Party and strive on earnestly for their consummation. Above all, our recent declarations in favor of the convocation of a National Congress and the abolition of unequal treaties should be carried into effect with the least possible delay. The worthy and the able are chosen as office holders. Mutal confidence is fostered and good neighborliness cultivated. Therefore people do not regard their own parents as parents, nor do they treat only their own children as children. Provision is made for the aged till their death; the adults are given employment; and the young enabled to grow up. Widows and widowers, orphans, the old and childless as well as the sick and disabled are all well taken care of. Men have their proper roles and women have their homes. While they hate to see wealth lying about on the ground, they do not necessarily keep it for their own use. While they hate not to exert their own effort, they do not necessarily devote it for their own ends. Thus evil scheming is repressed, and robbers, thieves, and other flwaless elements fail to arise. So that outer doors do not need to be shut. This is called "The Age of Great Harmony." - Sun Wen
