D.T. Fleming Aloe Patch
| — | Ala Hele Kapalua Heritage Trail | — |
Honolua Plantation manager D.T. Fleming was acclaimed a visionary. In 1932 he started planting the African import known as aloe and by 1941 had over 25 acres of the crop in cultivation. Convinced of the plant's medicinal properties, he began testing with great zeal and thought the juice from the plant would also make an excellent base for a cream. Unfortunately, acceptance of its potential marketability was elusive and after his death in 1955 the aloe experiments were discontinued. Aloe grew abundantly in this area and near his residence Maka oi oi. Today, aloe products are popular with consumers worldwide.
