1. The History of the Southernmost Point Marker
Inscription. In 1808 importing of slaves was illegal and participation in slave tracking was considered an act of piracy. The United States Navy intercepted three slave ships headed to Cuba in 1860. The one thousand four hundred thirty-two Africans on board were brought to the shores of Key West and housed in barracks at Whitehead Point. Two hundred ninety five slaves died of illness during a three month stay prior to being returned to Africa.
