Regarding Big Woods Road. Big Woods apparently referred to an area just west of modern Warrenville that was, prior to white settlement, covered by a vast forested area. A DuPage County Forest Preserve called Big Woods, about four miles west of here, is basically all that is left of that woods.
The Big Woods Road memorialized by this sign was at some point renamed Warrenville Road; old maps of the city also indicate that it was called Aurora Road for a period. There is today a small cul-de-sac with modern homes called Big Woods Drive in Warrenville; it's about 1Ό west of this spot (on the other side of Butterfield Road), and runs roughly along the same line.
