Lakeside Michigan

Lakeside Michigan. . , Lakeside Michigan was one of the original cottage communities on the shores of Lake Erie along with Lakewood and Allens Cove that now make up present day Luna Pier, Michigan. Lakeside was located north of the present city park while Lakewood was located to the south of the city park. The shores of Lake Erie were very popular as a summer getaway for those traveling by trolley car from downtown Toledo or by auto from Toledo and Monroe Michigan especially during the roaring 20's. Prohibition of alcohol was the law of the land at that time, although it was not always adhered to. The grand opening of the Luna Pier dance floor was on July 3rd, 1926 in Lakeside Michigan. Thousands of people came over the years to dance on the terrazzo floor with the cool lake breezes, beneath the moon and stars. Many businesses sprung up nearby to offer lunch and dinners, sparkling ginger ale, ice cream and beach and boating accessories. The original Pier collapsed into Lake Erie after several ice storms in the 1940's. The three cottage communities of Lakeside, Lakewood and Allen Cove joined together in 1963 to form the present day City of Luna Pier, named after the famous dance floor pier which once stood here out on Lake Erie.
