City of South Amboy
The City of South Amboy was first settled in 1685 and was known as Radford's Ferry and the South Ward of Perth Amboy. The name "Amboy" comes from Native-American word "Amboge." South Amboy was formally incorporated into a township in 1798 and covered 104 square miles. Included in the Township of South Amboy are what today are the Boro of Sayreville, Monroe Township, Old Bridge Township, and land south to the Monmouth County boundary. In 1908, the present city of South Amboy was formed.
South Amboy has many milestones throughout its history. In 1716, there was ferry service established between South Amboy and Staten Island. In 1831, the first railroad in New Jersey was formed. The Camden and Amboy Railroad provided transportation between Camden and South Amboy. In 1912 the first air mail delivery service in New Jersey took place between South Amboy and Perth Amboy. The eight-minute flight over Raritan Bay carried over 2,500 pieces of mail.
In 1918, the T.A. Gillespie Company, a munitions plant in nearby Sayreville, exploded causing damage in South Amboy. A second accident occurred in 1950 when the transfer of 420 tons of munitions to barges from a dock near the end of Augusta Street exploded, again causing widespread damage throughout the town.
Remnants of South Amboy's earlier history can be found in the city today. This connection to its history has created a vibrant community with a promising future.
