Sandy and Beaver Canal
Let's Get Historic
In 1828, the Ohio Legislature issued a charter for the construction of the Sandy and Beaver Canal. The canal was meant to open commerce between the Ohio and Erie Canal and the Ohio River. Unfortunately, that goal was never achieved.
This 73-mile-long canal was an ambitious project that would require two tunnels, 30 dams, 90 locks, three reservoirs, and an aqueduct before its completion. After a series of problems, a flood caused the canal to cease operations in 1852. Remnants of the Sandy and Beaver Canal are found throughout Beaver Creek State Park and the surrounding area. Most famous among them is the restored Lock No. 36, which can be found in the Pioneer Village. Its swinging lock gates provide a glimpse into the past when the canal was operational.
