1. In Loving Memory of SSHLL President Anthony Michael Varvaro Marker
Anthony played baseball at Curtis High School before attending St. Johns University on a baseball scholarship. Drafted by the Seattle Mariners in 2006, he pitched for six seasons in the Major Leagues. In four years with the Atlanta Braves he pitched to a 2.99 era. In 2016 while with the Boston Red Sox, Anthony decided to retire pursue a dream career. Inspired by the events of 9/11/01, he joined the Port Authority of NY and NJ Police Department, and was assigned to the World Trade Center Command. Anthony died on September 11, 2022 on his way to serve at the WTC. Anthony had a ten year plan to bring lights and a turf field to SSHLL. On April 14, 2023, SSHLL had their 1st ever game under the lights, on a turf field, honoring Anthony's life, and fulfilling his dream in just seven months. His life will always shine on these fields and every child that plays here.
