Founded in 1986, the Noble Maritime Collection presents exhibition and programs that celebrate New York's working waterfront in the tradition of distinguished artist John A. Noble (1913-1983). The museum uses art to make the harbor accessible to all and fosters an understanding of its history and relevance to the culture and economy of the community.
Visitors can explore Noble's houseboat studiorestored and installed inside the museumand learn about the history of Sailors' Snug Harbor through its art and artifacts. There is a recreation of a sailors' dormitory room, as well as a ship model gallery and exhibitions featuring Noble's work and maritime-themed contemporary art.
Considered "one of the nation's best examples of a volunteer restoration," the museum opened at Snug Harbor in 2000 after a $3.5 million adaptive reuse project of Building D, a former sailors' dormitory. The eight-year rehabilitation, led by the volunteer Noble Crew, garnered the 1999 New York Preservation Award from the Municipal Art Society of New York, the Preservation League Award, and President's Award from the Staten Island Chamber of Commerce.
