Inscription. When in 1864 the Sephardic community split in two, the new Reform Temple Emanu-El bought land to use for a cemetery. Twenty-two years later Mikve Israel bought the adjacent plot for its orthodox city dwellers. A wall separated the two until 1958: the congregations merged a few years later.

Today, the 'new' cemetery is the burial ground for all Jews on the island, including members of the mainly orthodox Ashkenazi Shaarei Tsedek community. The earlier gravestones show elaborate sculptures and engravings, but most modern graves only mark the name and dates of the deceased.
