The First Jesuit Compound
once stood on this site
1581 - 1768

Site of the first compound of the Society of Jesus prior to their expulsion from the Philippines, 1581-1768. The Church of Santa Ana (1596-1604) and the succeeding Church of San Ignacio (constructed, 1626), Colegio de San Ignacio (established, 1586), and Colegio de San Jose (1601) were built on this site. Turned over to the Archbishop of Manila for use as a secular seminary, 1784. Destroyed by earthquake, 1852. Converted as a military barracks known as the Cuartel de Espaρa, 1880. Occupied by the 31st Infantry of the U.S. Army, 1898. Destroyed during the Second World War. Occupied by the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, 1967.
