1. Lavaca River Marker
Inscription.
The Lavaca River begins in the northwest corner of Lavaca County and flows generally southeast some 115 miles to its mouth on Lavaca Bay. The watershed drains an area of approximately 2,280 square miles.
First called River of the Canes by the French, later both the French and Spanish refer to the river as "Riviere de Les Veches" or "Cow River” due to the number of buffalo found grazing along its banks. In time the name evolved into "La Baca" or "Head of Cow" by the Spanish and finally "La Vaca" by the early Anglo settlers.
The Lavaca River is classified as intermittent because the water flow is dependent on rainfall rather than permanent springs. Various tributary streams add water to the overall flow. The North Fork begins near Lavaca Fayette County boundary and flows into the Lavaca three miles southwest of Komensky. The West Prong begins southwest of Moulton and flows southeast until it enters the Lavaca.
