Regarding Partners for a Century. The launch date for USS Newport News (SSN-750) is 15 March 1986, the date given on the marker. The Los Angeles-class nuclear attack submarine was laid down (keel laid) at Newport News Shipbuilding on 3 March 1984, and after her 1985 launch, took a further three years to complete construction and trails. The boat commissioned into the US Navy on 3 June 1989 and remains in active service in 2026.

If the viewer turns to their immediate right from the marker, the 1880s original administration building for Newport News Shipbuilding (& Dry Dock Company, per their title at the time) dominates the intersection of 41st Street and Washington Avenue. The original company name is still visible in painted letters on the arched 2nd floor transom; three windows on the main floor below it have replaced the original entrance.
