Presently known as the Philippine Merchant Marine Academy. Established by virtue of a Royal Decree, dated 1 January 1820, by Ferdinand VII, King of Spain. First opened, 5 April 1820. Also known as the Academia de Pilotaje. Renamed as the Nautical School of the Philippine Islands, 1899. Closed down, 1907. Reopened outside Intramuros at Arroceros, 1913. Renamed as the Philippine Nautical School, 1914. Moved to Pasay City, 1918. Present name acquired, 1963. Transferred to Fort Bonifacio, 1968; then to San Narciso, Zambales, 1998.
Juan Luna, painter and patriot, studied here, 1869-1872.
