Palacios in Matagorda County, Texas — The American South (West South Central)
Courageous Sisters
| | Hotel Fence Wrap Exhibit Walk | |
Charles' sister, Nellie Luther (1901-1961) was a woman of remarkable dedication. She was a junior high school teacher and sometimes managed the Hotel. She spent the night that Hurricane Carla hit in 1961, alone in the Hotel in the only bathtub in the building. She was seemingly unhurt, but sadly died a week later.
Charles' sister, Mary Annie Luther (1892-1972) was also a Palacios resident. The Palacios Beacon reported that during the 1942 hurricane "Miss Luther stayed with the switchboard almost continually, even though the brick building where the telephone offices are located was unroofed and a number of window glasses broken."
