Inscription.
Carla, a category 5 hurricane, hit Palacios on September 3, 1961. The Hotel weathered the storm well, but the Round House pavilion across the road was totally destroyed. The Palacios Beacon reported that Mr. Luther believed, "The avenue of palms kept debris from destroying the hotel."

Lyndon Johnson visited Palacios as Vice President after much of the town was devastated. He wrote to Charles Luther to assure him that he would do everything possible to secure funding for the clean-up of Palacios.
