Ash Grove
Circa 1790, Thomas Fairfax (1762-1846) built his home, Ash Grove, and its two outbuildings (the kitchen and smokehouse) on land acquired between 1710 and 1719 by Lord Thomas Fairfax (1693-1781) from his Culpeper relations. From the early 1850s until 1997, the property was owned by the Sherman family. A fire in 1960 caused extensive damage to the main dwelling. The Historic American Building Survey documentation prepared just prior to the fire was used to restore the house to its prefire appearance. Ash Grove, the two outbuildings, and the land on which they stand were conveyed to the Fairfax County Park Authority in 1997.
