Greater Mallard's Chapel A.M.E. Church Cemetery. Autauga County. , Dating to the Reconstruction Era, Greater Mallard's Chapel A.M.E. Church Cemetery has 151 marked graves and many unmarked graves. Associated with Greater Mallard's Chapel A.M.E. Church, which purchased the church building and property in 1885 for $600 from the Mallard's Chapel Methodist Episcopal Church, the cemetery stretches across two parcels. The oldest section of the cemetery is located in the woods and encompasses nearly an acre of unmarked, sunken graves, which are believed to be the graves of formerly enslaved people (freedmen). Among the known freedmen buried in the cemetery are Belza Lamar, who died in 1914 at age 65 years; Bettie Sheppard, who died in 1941 at age 92 years; and Amanda T. Steele, who died in 1965 at age 101 years. , The cemetery contains the graves of at least 21 U.S. Veterans some of whom served during world war one, world war two, Korea, Vietnam, and the Persian Gulf. Five world war one veterans are buried in the cemetery, including Walter Chappell, John Dudley, Charlie Scott, Ed Underwood, and Frank Underwood, and possibly others. Edward L. Chappell, a Private First-Class in the US Army who was killed in action on March 17, 1969. is also buried in the cemetery. For his service, Chappell received a Bronze Star. The cemetery also contains the grave of Private First-Class Arthur Broadnax (1919-1970), a member of the Headquarters Battery, 333 Field Artillery Battalion, which was the first black artillery unit during world war two Arthur is credited with firing the first shot from his unit at the Nazis in 1944. , Listed in the Alabama Historic Cemetery Register on September 21, 2023
