1. Greer Family Cemetery Marker
Inscription. By the 1850s, area settlers included the Carr, Donaldson (Donnelson), Greer and Lockamy (Lockmy) families. In November 1858, James A. and Elizabeth A. Powell sold James Asel (Asa) (1811-1889) and Frances (Carr) Greer (1832-1908) some 320 acres near the Navasota River. Part of this parcel was dedicated as a family and community cemetery. Two of James and Frances' children, Martha A. (1858-1866) and Thomas E. Greer (1861-1866), died within two weeks of each other and are the two oldest marked burials. Tradition states that several older burials are unmarked, including Native Americans and enslaved African Americans. With generations, of pioneer descendants, veterans, educators, and business and civic leaders, this active cemetery remains a continuum of the area's history.
