1. The Bumpass Trace Marker

Inscription. In 1807 Dr. Gabriel Bumpass (1761-1846) and several families from South Carolina settled at Crosswater. To avoid the dense cane in the valleys, they cut a circuitous route along the ridges from Columbia into Giles County. This route became the Bumpass Trace (Trail), the principal road for travelers going as far south as Pulaski and west of Pulaski. The first mail was carried over this road, which intersected U.S. 64 at Bodenham.
