1. In the Longhouse Marker
You step through the doorway, noticing the scents of fresh cut palmetto and smoke, and the sounds of conversation and laughter. Someone calls a friendly greeting. As your eyes adjust to the cool, dark shelter, details emerge, immersing you in the busy daily life of the longhouse.
Drop spindle
A wobbling, spinning motion draws your gaze to a young woman making thread on a spindle made of a clam shell and a stick. As the spindle whirls, her deft fingers feed in pieces of fluffy fiber, gathered from nearby Sea Island cotton plants.
Backstrap loom
Soft thumps and clicking noises guide your attention to a woman seated at a loom. As her hands work the weft, her body provides tension to the warp strands. The bright red fibers have been dyed with cochineal, made from tiny insects gathered from prickly pear cactus.
