Inscription. The Hillary House grounds offer a modest residential landscape reflecting the casual interests and financial resources of its residents. During the Victorian and Edwardian periods, leisure time became more prevalent for the upper and middle classes and many were able to spend more time tending to their lawns and gardens.

The families of Hillary House adopted the philosophy of embracing nature's bounty and creating an inviting space to entertain and enjoy. It is likely that many of the trees still found on the property today were already here or planted around the same time as the house was built in 1862. The families also enjoyed the sights and smells of lilac bushes that lined the property as well as a lawn full of snowdrops and scilla in the spring.
