Inscription. Built at the same time as the House and an important example of Gothic Revival architecture in its own right, the Barn is fundamentally important in the history of the Hillary House property. In the 1800s and 1900s before hospitals, telephones, and automobiles, family doctors commonly travelled to their patients' homes to deliver medical treatments.

The doctors of Hillary House travelled throughout Aurora, King Township, and the Township of Whitchurch for appointments. The barn enabled the doctors to maintain their practice by housing the horses and equipment such as the gig (a light two-wheeled carriage), phaeton (a large four-wheeled carriage), and sleigh that they would use to reach their destination.

The barn also supported other aspects of family life such as shelter for the cows, chickens, and hay. In later years, a lean-to drive shed addition was added for an automobile.
