Nearly 300 men from Lemont Township served in the American Civil War including John Warden who recieved the Medal of Honor for valor at Vicksburg. The Old Lemont Methodist Church was a recruiting post and Lincoln's Funeral Train stopped at the Chicago & Alton Depot

6. Lemont Civil War Memorial (third plaque with names)
the Lemont Depot, Abraham Lincoln, the old Methodist church and two plaques with images of Civil War soldiers.
 
Regarding Lemont Civil War Memorial. Corporal John Warden was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1893, in honor of his performance during the Siege of Vicksburg in 1863. According to his citation, Corp. Warden was awarded the medal for gallantry during a "volunteer storming party" of Confederate ammunition barges on May 22, 1863, while a member of Company E, 55th Illinois Infantry. Warden moved to Washington State after the war and died in 1906. He is buried in Orting Cemetery in Orting, Washington.
