Robert Hermann Schomburgk
(1804-1865)
(English):
British explorer and scientist, consul of Santo Domingo, who sailed the sea and rivers of the Caribbean during his study expeditions. On one of his missions to the island of Hispaniola, today known as the Dominican Republic, he heard the legend of an enchanted river, home of the Taino Gods. His curiosity led him to find this magical location. Years went by and nothing was heard from the explorer, some said that the Taino deities, enraged by the invation of their home, shipwrecked his boat. Others said that when he arrived to this marvelous river he was so happy that he decided to live there forever.

Regarding Robert Hermann Schomburgk. (Excerpt from Wikipedia): In 1848, Schomburgk was appointed British consul to the Dominican Republic. In 1850, he signed an advantageous commercial treaty for Great Britain and also secured a truce from Soulouque on behalf of the Dominican government. During the following years, he contributed valuable papers about the physical geography of the island to the journal of the Royal Geographical Society. For example, he became the first recorded person in history to climb Hispaniola's (and the entire Caribbean's) highest mountain, Pico Duarte, in 1851, naming it "Monte Tina" and almost measuring its height correctly at 3,140 metres (10,300 ft).
