Fort Sumter Flag - 1861
On April 12, 1861, this flag was flying over Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina when Confederate batteries under the command of General P.G.T. Beauregard opened fire on the fort to begin the Civil War or War Between the States. Note the distinctive diamond pattern of 33 stars. On April 14, Union Major Robert Anderson lowered the flag after surrendering the fort. But exactly four years later on April 14, 1865 the same flag was raised again at Fort Sumter when control returned to the Union.
