Founded in 1840, the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery (BCDS) was the world's first dental college. In 1923, the BCDS merged with the University of Maryland's Dental Department to become what is now known as the University of Maryland School of Dentistry located a few blocks away at 650 W. Baltimore St.
For the first 13 years, however, from 1840 to 1853, the school did not have its own building. On November 3, 1840 at "7 1/2 o'clock," the BCDS held its introductory lectures at a Baptist Church on Calvert St. between Lexington and Saratoga Sts. Then from 1840 to 1845, the BCDS classes and clinical spaces were provided at 13 South Sharp St (known as Hopkins Plaza today), which was near the BCDS' founders homes. Newton University, an early liberal arts university, located on E. Lexington St. between N. Calvert and North sts (now known as Guilford Ave) was the last building BCDS shared space with from 1845 to 1853. After 1853, BCDS and other Baltimore dental schools started having their own buildings specifically built for dental education as the demand for dentistry grew.
Journey through the history of BCDS and UMSOD buildings by following the windows. You can find some of these buildings still standing around the city, so pay close attention to see what looks familiar.
