From the 19th century onwards, the term "art mill" was used to describe mills that exhibited a particularly high technical standard (for the time). The word "art" here refers not to art in the sense of creating a work of art, but to the engineering, i.e., the technology.(Submitted on March 25, 2026, by James Hulse of Medina, Texas.)
A key factor in earning the title of "art mill" was often the replacement of the old millstones with modern roller mills using steel rollers. This often went hand in hand with replacing the old waterwheels with modern turbines.
The Pegnitz River has a drop of 6 meters over the next 500 meters. This is the steepest gradient between its source and mouth, and the town of Lauf owes its name to the former rapids, known as "Loufen," from when the river was not yet tamed by weirs.Other sources claim the name originates from the time when a ford, rather than the current bridge, allowed passage across the river, meaning one could "walk" across.Photographed by James Hulse, March 3, 20262.
