Dame Edith Mary Evans (8 February 1888 14 October 1976) was an English actress. She was best known for her work on the West End stage, but also appeared in films at the beginning and towards the end of her career. Between 1964 and 1968, she was nominated for three Academy Awards.(Submitted on March 27, 2026.)
Evans's stage career spanned sixty years, during which she played more than 100 roles, in classics by Shakespeare, Congreve, Goldsmith, Sheridan and Wilde, and plays by contemporary writers including Bernard Shaw, Enid Bagnold, Christopher Fry and Noλl Coward.

Evans lived with her parents at 109 Ebury Street from 1890 until about 1912. As the daughter of a minor public servant, she had a comfortable upbringing if not a privileged one: she recalled that I always had a bedroom to myself.(Submitted on March 27, 2026.)
She made her amateur dιbut in October 1910, playing Viola in Twelfth Night. Her professional stage dιbut in a production of a sixth-century Hindu classic, Sakuntala came two years later, the same year she and her family left number 109.
