Site History
St. Louis Cemetery No. 2, established in 1823 in New Orleans' Tremι neighborhood, is among the city's most historic burial grounds. Known for its ornate 19th- century vaults and intricate ironwork, it reflects French, Spanish, and West African influences, as well as New Orleans' above-ground tomb tradition. Originally four squares, it was reduced to three in 1846. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975 and added to the Louisiana African American Heritage Trail in 2008, St. Louis Cemetery No. 2 remains a vital symbol of New Orleans' cultural heritage.
Project Description
As part of the Bridge to Crafts Careers program, the Preservation Resource Center of New Orleans and World Monuments Fund will host specialized workshops teaching historic trades in New Orleans cemeteries, beginning with tablet and ironwork restorations with the plan to expand into other skills. These courses, offered specifically to individuals seeking professional skills, will introduce participants to historic trades and convey transferable skills and knowledge in proper materials and techniques. Participants will first learn about the materials and tomb construction in a classroom setting before then engaging in active restoration in St. Louis Cemetery No. 2.
