French Quarter in New Orleans in Orleans Parish, Louisiana — The American South (West South Central)
This Cross
This cross has been dedicated to commemorate the complete renovation of all six buildings comprising the Archbishop Antoine Blanc Memorial and to mark the fourth major renovation of the Old Ursuline Convent/Archiepiscopal Residence constructed in 1745 - 1752 by French Colonial Army Engineers. The complete renovation and restoration of this entire complex was under the aegis of its owner, the Archdiocese of New Orleans, and was initiated and completed during the period of 1970 - 1978 by Reverend Monsignor Earl C. Woods, Chancellor of the Archdiocese of New Orleans, June 1, 1966, through June 30, 1992.
This cross was a gift of the City of Rouen, France, to the Archdiocese of New Orleans to be erected on this site to commemorate the arrival of the Ursuline Nuns in New Orleans from their convent in Rouen. Originally the cross was on the ridge of the roof of the old Ursuline Convent in Rouen and was given to the Archdiocese as a souvenir when the Rouen Convent had to be demolished because of severe structural damages. Mrs. Myldred Tronchet Masson Costa of New Orleans and Mrs. Lucie Godin of Rouen, France, initiated arrangements for the cross to be donated and transported to New Orleans.
The Installation of the cross on theses red premises was sponsored by the Archdiocese of New Orleans and Prance Amerique de la Louisiane.
