This cemetery contains the graves of the James F. and Catherine "Kittie" Jackson Family and others who were part of the African American community known as "The Fort." The Jacksons, both formerly enslaved, purchased 11½ acres of land at Fort Ward in 1894, and reserved this area of their property for the burial of family and friends.

This monument is dedicated to the Jackson Family and their Fort community neighbors who rest in peace here.

The following family members were laid to rest at the Jackson Cemetery:
James F. Jackson, ca. 1845 - February 19, 1923 • Catherine Jackson, ca. 1845 - April 17, 1923 • Robert M. Jackson, Born 1887 - Died Between 1918-1922 • James Henry Jackson, June 12, 1912 - May 22, 1944 • Rudolph Jackson, May 31, 1916 - August 31, 1918 • Lucy Jackson Green, Died June 21, 1957

May the Lord watch over this sacred space, amen
