Ashland in Hanover County, Virginia — The American South (Mid-Atlantic)
Berkleytown Cemetery
A cemetery lies within this fenced area on private property adjacent to the park. While the Town of Ashland does not own the cemetery, the area has been enclosed out of respect for those interred here. The identities of the individuals at rest remain largely unknown, though it is believed that more than one dozen African American neighbors and family members are buried at this site.
This cemetery serves as a reminder of the segregation and discrimination that was prevalent during the Antebellum and Jim Crow eras, which often prevented African Americans from being buried in white-owned cemeteries.
To those laid to rest here, we extend our deepest respect and wish you eternal peace.
Erected by Town of Ashland.
