About the Artist:
Raven Halfmoon (b. 1991) is an artist and sculptor from Norman, Oklahoma. She is a citizen of the Caddo Nation and also Choctaw, Delaware, and Otoe Missouria.
Sunsets in the West reflects the colors and concepts of Western life through an Indigenous experience. The vibrant colors of the sunsets in Halfmoon's home state of Oklahoma painted a luminous backdrop for her life there. Oklahoma has long been known as the place of "Cowboys and Indians," and she informs that narrative with her experiences. She has also spent significant amounts of time in Montana and California building ceramic pieces that were influenced by her understanding and portrayal of the West. It is deeply poignant for Halfmoon to celebrate her connections to the West. For example, her great-grandfather, Hubert Halfmoon, often wore cowboy hats and boots while drumming and singing at Caddo Tribal dances.
Halfmoon's sculptures are in the permanent collections of the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami, and the Montclair Art Museum. In 2023, she was selected as an Eiteljorg Contemporary Art Fellow (Eiteljorg Museum, Indianapolis, IN), and, in 2024, she was a finalist for the international Loewe Craft Prize (Loewe Foundation, Madrid, Spain).
