Welcome To The James A. Garfield Memorial
President Garfield was a man of the people, in life and death. His assassination set in motion one of America's earliest crowdfunding campaigns - to construct a memorial to a man whose legacy was as grand as the whole Republic. Penny by penny, dollar by dollar, citizens raised the money to build the memorial standing before you.
Built of native Ohio sandstone, the memorial stands 180' tall with an impressive tower, 50' in diameter, rising toward the sky. Five terra cotta panels adorn the exterior, each depicting a turning point in Garfield's life - more than 100 life-size figures are represented. Inside, red granite columns, a golden mosaic dome, & stained glass windows eulogize the marble statue of James A. Garfield, standing at the ready in the center of the Memorial Hall. In the crypt below are the bronze caskets of Garfield and his wife, Lucretia, and the urns of their daughter, Molly, and her husband, Joseph Stanley-Brown.
Come along on the journey through our restoration efforts to ensure the James A. Garfield Memorial stands the test of time, prepared to endure the next 153 years and beyond.
