Flying Saucer Sighting
An average Autumn day on the 6th April 1966 became unforgettable for hundreds of pupils and staff of the Westall High School and Westall State School.

It was late morning just before first recess, and all students were in class like any other normal day. A physical education class was outside playing cricket on the oval.

The sighting quickly resonated throughout the school. Students and teachers ran frantically towards the mysterious unidentified objects in the sky.

The flying saucers hovered near the schools' ovals before ascending and descending rapidly behind the copse of pine trees to the south, now known as The Grange Reserve.

"There are flying saucers in the sky."
Unknown, Westall High School Student

"It descended down to the goal posts sat there for a while, then lifted straight up and took straight off.."
Brendan Dickson, Westall High School Student

"No seams, no joins...looked like it had come out of a mold...one smooth piece of metal" "I got up to it and wanted to touch it....... You could feel heat about a metre away"
Victor Zakruzny, Westall High School Student

had gripped everyone. Some ran inside fearing for their lives, but others leapt the school fence and followed the 'round silver disc' to the pine trees where it had landed.

Two girls ran front of the pack, but we somehow affected by the disc, passing out at the foot of where the 'thing' had landed.

The craft made no sound, but in the background a stir of engines quickly followed. Four or five Discernible small aircraft were circling the craft chasing it like a 'game of cat and mouse'. Before everyone's eyes, the saucer took off, emerging through the trees and against the blue sky it turned side on and just disappeared into thin air.

The footprint left behind was something to behold. A large area, twice the size of a family car, had been imprinted into the grass, swirled perfectly into a circle and still warm.

There was a big round flattened patch of yellow...almost burnt...the grass in a swirly type pattern"
Terry Peck - Westall High School Student

With the memory of what had just taken place fresh in their mind, everyone returned back to school, 15 minutes late to class. An ambulance had arrived to treat the girl who

had passed out.

"She was taken away in an ambulance. That was the last time that I ever saw her."
Jacqueline Argent - Westall High School Student

That afternoon was abuzz with everyone whispering stories about the flying saucer, so much that the headmaster called all students out of their classes to attend a special assembly. Headmaster Samblebe, in a stern voice, declared to the who;e school that this morning's event was 'not to be spoken about'. He concluded that there was no such things as flying saucers and if he heard any student talking about it they would face detention. Frustrated by this gagging order, some of the students did interviews with a news crew that had arrived soon after. Within minutes, police had also arrived and ushered students back into school grounds and ordered the news crews to leave.

"Like a thin beam of light...half the length of a light aircraft...It was silvery-grey and seemed to thicken at times...similar to when a disc is turned a little to show the underside"
Andrew Greenwood, Westall High School Science Teacher (The Dandenong Journal, 1966)

"I know what I saw and it was not a plane, I am certain about that"

Corroborating Tales
The mass UFO sighting on 6th of April 1966 was not just a phenomenon witnessed by Westall State and High Schools. Clayton South was a well established suburb of Melbourne and The Grange Reserve was surrounded by farming communities and other industry professionals at the time.

On that infamous morning, the local community were going about their daily trade: tending to crops, managing market gardens and mending broken machinery. A young boy was at The Grange Reserve that morning, on a pocket of land that his family leased to keep horses. The flying saucer appeared from nowhere, coming in and out of view from behind the pines of The Grange Reserve. It was ascending and descending rapidly unlike anything he’d ever seen.

Looking across the paddock, he noticed the local school kids charging over in a state of hysteria following the object, about the size of two family cars.

“I saw the thing come across the horizon and drop down behind the pine trees……and saw it leave again”
— Shaun Matthews, Resident (The Sunday Age, 2005)

“(I) thought somebody was projecting film into the sky. I didn’t believe it was really happening”

Paul Smith, Market Gardener (Westall 66 Documentary)

Across the field, in a parcel of land adjacent to The Grange Reserve, another young man was tending to his market garden with his boss. The sight of the foreign flying object in the clear sky was so overwhelming he couldn’t piece it together.

The confusing chain of events continued shortly after the UFO had abruptly disappeared, chased off by light aircraft. What appeared to be military personnel arrived in trucks and jeeps and began sweeping the area.

“After a while trucks turned up. Looked like Army trucks.”
— Paul Smith, Market Gardener (Westall 66 Documentary)

The men in uniforms, some in blue suits and others in camouflage, took detailed measurements of the circular clearing and swept the area with Geiger detectors. Crouched hidden below the low canopy tree on the edge of the opening, a young boy, panic and his sister watched as the unusual events unfolded.

“Two men kicked violently at the ground…. We had no idea what we were walking into…. To have the army there, it was something important.”
— Les Madew (Westall 66 Documentary)

On Wednesday, 6 April 1966, students and a teacher from Westall High School reported seeing a flying object. It was described as round with a domed top, and white, grey, or silver in colour. According to the students, the object descended behind a row of trees and into the Grange, an open area south of the school. Some accounts describe the object as being pursued by five unidentified aircraft. Shaun Matthews was on vacation at the Grange and reported seeing an object with a slight purple hue and about twice the size of a family car.
