Old Swedes in Wilmington in New Castle County, Delaware — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
North Porticos
| | Old Swedes Churchyard Walking Tour | |
By 1750 the heavy roof had begun to force the thick walls apart, most noticeably on the north side, and much earlier than on the south side (see mark #14). Four stone "buttresses" were built to counter this effect. Years later, these open porticos were enclosed. A window was installed to the left "portico," and this has become the Sacristy. A door was installed to the "portico" on the right and it is now used as the Vesting room.
