1. Sgt. Bartlett Yancey Malone Marker
The 25th Christmas Day and it was clear and cold. I was both cold and hungry all day. Only got a piece of bread and a cup of coffee for breakfast and a small slice of meat and a cup of soup and 5 crackers for dinner. Supper we had none.
The 29th was cloudy in the morning and clear in the evening. Jefferson Walker died in the morning. He belonged to the 57th N.C.
The 1st day of January 64 was so cold that 5 of our men froze to death before morning. We all suffered a great deal with the cold and hunger. Two of our men caught a rat and cooked and ate it. Their names were Sgt. N. W. Hester and I. E. Covington.
The 6th was cold and cloudy. He had nine of our men die at the hospital today.
The 10th was a nice day. I met the man who makes the coffins at this place. He said that htey average 12 prisoners die here every day.
The 17th it was so cold that we all had to lie down and wrap up in our blankets to keep from freezing for we had no wood for a fire. "For He hath said I will never leave thee nor forsake thee". So we may boldly say the Lord is my helper and I will not fear what man shall do to me
