"We received a cup of thin soup and a small piece of bakers' bread with a small slice of pickled pork. The ration never changed. How they could be so rotten we never understood. Only one meat was served each day. Many men contracted scurvy."
"One night a cold north wind sprang up and my thin clothes did not stop it a bit. It seemed to blow through my bones. I had one slazie blanket and wrapped that around me and lay down to suffer but not sleep."
