1. Memorial Bricks and Flagpoles Marker

Inscription.
The engraved bricks you see around the P.O.W. monument have been donated by descendants of the prisoners, veterans' organizations and individuals. The names on the bricks represent a small percentage of the documented 52,264 POW's imprisoned at Pt. Lookout. This prison camp had the largest number of POW's for either side during the War Between the States. In addition to military POW bricks there are civilians listed including at least 2 bricks in memory of women prisoners. Of the first 100 bricks installed, 5 are for African Americans who served in the Confederate Armed Services and were confined at Pt. Lookout.

Along the perimeter of the circle are the flagpoles of the 13 states that succeeded from the Union. Next to each flagpole is a tablet that contains the words of a prisoner from that state with quotes from their own experiences while confined confined at Pt. Lookout. These quotes are from letters and diaries are truly
