1. Pvt. William Hennry Laird Marker
While confined at Pt. Lookout Pvt. Laird was elected Sgt. Major by his fellow prisoners to serve as Mediator between the prisoners and Union officials. Below is a report of unprovoked indiscriminate shootings by the camp guards.
Pt Lookout Arpil 22, 1864

"Sir, I respectfully submit a report of the conduct of the patrols of the camp last night. In Co. H 5th Div. one of the men lying in his tent remarked to his comrade, "you are pulling the cover off me" whereupon he was ordered out of the tent and compelled to come out by threats to shoot into the tent in case of noncompliance. He was made to double-quick from the center ditch to the bay fence and back. In Co H 5th Div. a man while laying in his tent was struck slightly on the foot, the ball having before entering his tent passed thru the next one above it. In Co H 4th Div. a man was very painfully wounded in the foot while lying in his tent. All these occurrences in or about 12PM.
