Prison authorities provided a bulletin board just inside the pen near the camp post office for posting war news and prison announcements of a general nature. The bulletin board provided notice to those prisoners who received letters and packages from relations. prisoners checked the bulletin board often, not only for mail, but for the list of prisoners to be exchanged hoping to see their names posted. Instructions for exchanges included the specific time of assembly for prisoners with their belongings, by the main gate.
Located next to this bulletin board, prison officials provided a letter or mailbox for the shipment of prisoner mail. Confederate prisoner, private E.H. Sutton, 24th Georgia Infantry, stated, that the prison post office and "letter box" was located near the main prison gate where soldiers could drop their outgoing mail " prisoners when they wrote from the camp had to have their letters red by a (Union) officer to see if they contained anything that they did not wish to pass and in case there was anything objectionable in them, they were destroyed."
